Who We Are
Over 35 years ago, a group of local business leaders, elected officials and visionary community members broke ground on an ambitious project – the construction of an entertainment facility that would bring the Nation’s biggest stars and best entertainment to the people of Maine. Their mission was to excite and enrich the good people and businesses that call this beautiful region home. They built something truly special in the process.
Over 5,000 events later, The Civic Center continues to deliver on this important mission:
- As the host of diverse acts – from Elton John to Toby Keith, John Mayer to Motley Crue – The Civic Center continues to showcase national-caliber talent.
- As the proud home of the Portland Pirates, The Civic Center continues a long tradition of championship level American Hockey League (AHL) play.
- As a platform for unique family entertainment – from Disney on Ice to Sesame Street Live, The Harlem Globetrotters to American Idol – The Civic Center continues to connect, surprise and inspire us.
- As Southern Maine’s favorite backdrop for inspired local performances – from state championship sports to high school graduations – The Civic Center continues to shine a light on our best and brightest.
Put more simply, The Civic Center is truly “Where the Stars Shine.” Check out Who Played When to get a taste of where we’ve been, and visit My Favorite Stars to share your Civic Center memories.
Today – like Yesterday – a committed group of inspired people continue The Civic Center’s important mission. From our exceptional Staff and volunteer Board of Trustees to the generous support of the Friends of the Center, we are working harder than ever to position The Civic Center for continued success. Through an ambitious Modernization Plan, we will ensure that The Civic Center meets the needs of Tomorrow’s audiences, tenants, teams, promoters and talented performers.
Working together – and with the help of people like you – we can keep the stars shining here for many years to come.
